Lacrosse Buying Guide

Lacrosse is thought to be America’s first game. Played originally by Native Americans and later adopted by the French and Canadians, lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing games in the United States. Whether you’re an expert lacrosse player looking to upgrade your equipment, or a beginner looking for your first lacrosse stick and pads, eBay provides a great selection of lacrosse gear at great value.

Select Lacrosse Sticks, Pockets, and Strings

Select Lacrosse Sticks, Pockets, and Strings

Your lacrosse stick is the most important piece of lacrosse equipment you’re going to use. Your position, physical size, and skill level all affect what kind of lacrosse stick you’ll need to buy. A lacrosse stick is made up of three main parts: the handle, pocket, and shooting strings.

Lacrosse stick handle

The handle of a lacrosse stick is usually made of aluminum or wood. Aluminum lacrosse handles are lighter and make for faster swings. Wood lacrosse handles are heavier and are useful on defense.

Lacrosse handles can also either be rounded or squared. If you need more tactical manipulation and skillful fakes, look for a rounded lacrosse handle. If you want a faster approach, consider a square lacrosse handle. Generally, attacking players like round, light aluminum lacrosse handles and defenders prefer heavier wooden lacrosse handles.

The lacrosse stick length depends on your position and how big you are.

  • Attackers: Attackers usually have the shortest sticks for maneuverability. Buy a stick that is a minimum of 30 inches.

  • Midfielders: Midfielders generally use longer sticks for versatility; buy a stick between 35 and 45 inches long.

  • Defenders: Defenders use the longest sticks, topping out at around 60 inches.

  • Goalies: Goalies typically use a stick that is 42 inches long.

Of course, if you’re on the small or really large side, you’ll want to buy a lacrosse stick that fits you. But use the guidelines above to help you decide.

Lacrosse stick pocket

There are three main types of pockets on a lacrosse stick. Which one you choose depends on your play style and experience.

  • Traditional lacrosse pockets: Traditional lacrosse pockets have been around the longest. A weave of nylon lacings is attached to four adjustable leather strips, which the player can tighten or loosen, depending on the desired pocket depth. While they can be adjusted to most playing styles, they usually have great accuracy because of the supportive leather strips. Traditional pockets that are deep can also have a lot of whip.

  • Mesh lacrosse pockets: Mesh lacrosse pockets are made of a woven nylon mesh that never needs adjustment. Mesh pockets are looser and provide better ball control when maneuvering and running. The looser weave also provides a deeper pocket, which is well suited to goalies that need to capture the ball.

  • Hybrid lacrosse pockets: Hybrid lacrosse pockets attempt to combine the ball control of a mesh pocket with the accuracy of a leather one.

Lacrosse shooting strings

Lacrosse shooting strings will change the balance and control of a pocket. Shooting strings are laced vertically in the pocket.

Wear Protective Lacrosse Gear

Wear Protective Lacrosse Gear

Lacrosse helmets, lacrosse gloves, and lacrosse pads are all essential protective gear when playing lacrosse.

Lacrosse helmets

Lacrosse helmets must be worn in every lacrosse game. Lacrosse helmets secure to the head in four key locations to provide an accurate, comfortable, and safe fit. Durable, impact-resistant plastic and a metal cage to protect the face form the standard lacrosse helmet, with an additional throat protector for goalie lacrosse helmets.

Also, lacrosse players generally wear a mouth guard. The mouth guard is usually attached to the metal face guard, so that it isn’t easy to lose.

Lacrosse gloves

Lacrosse gloves are reinforced with impact-absorbing padding to cushion blows to the back of the hand while the leather or synthetic palm allows for a flexible yet strong grip. Your glove size is the distance from where your elbow pads end to your fingers.

Lacrosse pads

There are three main types of lacrosse pads: rib, shoulder, and elbow.

Rib pads shield ribs, the lower back, and vital organs. Shoulder pads protect shoulders and chest. Elbow pads cushion elbows, and the upper and lower arms. To protect the forearm, a combination elbow and slash pad is appropriate.

Sizing for pads is often based on generic body type, such as “large adult” or “medium child.” Most come with a variety of adjustable straps to ensure a proper fit.

Get Lacrosse Goals and Accessories

Get Lacrosse Goals and Accessories

It doesn’t take much lacrosse equipment to turn an open grassy area into a decent lacrosse field.

  • Lacrosse goals: NCAA regulation lacrosse goals are 6 feet high, 6 feet wide, and 7 feet deep. Most goals are covered with mesh netting.

  • Lacrosse balls: Lacrosse balls are sold separately or in packs of 12.

  • Hockey tape: Hockey tape is a great addition to get you some extra stick grip.

  • Lacrosse apparel: While most athletic clothing is appropriate for lacrosse, specialized lacrosse apparel, such as shirts and lacrosse shoes are available.

  • Lacrosse stick end-caps: Personalize your lacrosse stick with a colored end-cap.

  • Lacrosse strings: Your lacrosse pocket ultimately determines what kind of ball control and accuracy your lacrosse stick will have. Changing and adjusting lacrosse strings lets you personalize how your lacrosse stick performs.

  • Lacrosse stick bags: Lacrosse stick bags protect your most vital piece of equipment. Many bags have extra room for balls, replacement strings, or other accessories.
